Fall 2026 SOWK 590 Week 08 - Advanced Seminar I

Week eight is synchronous with having class on Saturday (10/17/26) for SOWK 590. Students continue to work at the practicum and will submit their weekly journal. We will have the following agenda:

  • SLED: Intersectionality and Identity
  • Mindfulness activity
  • Practice Learning Reflection Group

The learning objectives this week include:

  • Students consider intersectionality and identity, and how these concepts relate to their practice.
  • Students will actively practice a mindfulness activity.
  • Students will recognize the shared experiences of their peers in the practicum and be able to utilize the group as a method for sharing and problem-solving.
  • Students will analyze their practicum experience, reflecting on how it connects to their development and demonstration of competence.

On the left, a pink rounded panel with the heading 'Agenda' and three items: 'SLED: Intersectionality and Identity,' 'Mindfulness activity,' and 'Practice Learning Reflection Group.' On the right, the heading 'Learning Objectives' with three bullets: 'Students will consider how Intersectionality and Identity can relate to their practice,' 'Students will actively practice a mindfulness activity,' and 'Students will recognize their peers' shared experiences in the practicum and use the group as a method for sharing and problem-solving.' Top left reads 'Plan for Week 08.'

Two glowing poi trace bright blue and magenta arcs as figures spin them on a dark, night-time beach, with a faint horizon behind. The left side of the slide shows the title 'Poi Spinning' with the subtitle 'A Self Care Activity,' followed by bullets: 'Is inherently mindful,' 'Re-energizes the brain after long periods of cognitive-heavy tasks,' 'Gives emotional boost,' 'Allows for movement metaphor,' 'Facilitates multi-sensory experiencing,' 'Involves rhythmic, bilateral movement,' 'Crosses multiple midlines,' and 'Creates community when spinning with others.'

Poi Spinning: A Self Care Activity

There are a number of benefits to poi spinning:

  • Is inherently mindful
  • Re-energizes the brain after long periods of cognitive-heavy tasks
  • Gives emotional boost
  • Allows for movement metaphor
  • Facilitates multi-sensory experiencing
  • Involve rhythmic, bilateral movement
  • Crosses multiple midlines
  • Creates community when spinning with others

A large QR code sits inside a black circle, labeled 'Lori Sirs, DSW, LICSW, Poi Spinning FAQ's,' on a slide titled 'Make Your Poi Ball.' The slide's text says to pick a pair of socks, fill them with ⅓ to ½ cup of rice, and tie the holding knot so the poi is no longer than the spinner's arm, with the ball-end between elbow and bicep. Below, 'Let's Practice: Learning to spin' lists planes, direction, and timing.

Making a Poi Ball

  • Pick a pair of socks the style of your choice
  • Fill up a bag with rice, about ⅓ to ½ cup

Determine proper length before tying holding knots. A poi should not be longer than the spinner’s arm. The best way to determine where to tie the knot (for holding the poi) is to hold the sock at the open end and put your arm straight up. Adjust where you hold the poi until the ball-end is hanging between the elbow and the bicep.

A presentation slide titled 'Practice Learning Reflection Group' on a white background with a dark gray rounded panel on the right. The left side lists a 'Group Check-in Question' ('What's something that felt energizing or draining this week?') and 'Practicum Discussion' prompts about practicum happenings, client needs, and sharing client work. The right panel, 'Group Norms,' lists four commitments: be respectful, approach dialogue with an open mind, engage and participate, and keep clients' information confidential.

Practice Learning Reflection Group

Group Norms

  • We will be respectful of each other
  • We will approach our dialogue with an open mind

  • We will keep our clients’ information confidential

Group Check-in Question

What’s something that felt energizing or draining this week?

Practicum Discussion

  • What are some of the things that are happening in your practicums?
  • What are some of the needs of the clients you are working with?
  • Examples of client work to share with the group?
